Sports Pastime: Manny Pacquiao's Victory Over Miguel Cotto

Since the day my boyfriend and I heard about the fight of the Filipino boxing champ Manny "Pacman" Pacquaio against the WBO welterweight champion and the pride of Puerto Rico Miguel Cotto, we never missed a day talking about it. We had been looking forward to watching the "Pacman" on the ring again with hopes that he would again win another title.

Here are two videos showing how both Pacquio and Cotto prepared for the November 14, 2009 fight:

Anyway, the Manny-Cotto match started at around 5AM here in Sweden. My boyfriend and I were already sitting in front of the computer (watched it through live streaming) waiting for Manny to step into the ring as early as 4 in the morning. It was one thrilling moment to finally see Manny and Freddie Roach (Pacquiao's trainer for 9 years now) walking their way to the fighting box.

I could still recall the Pacquiao-Hatton match (May 2, 2009 at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada) when many looked forward to Hatton winning the fight but were all disappointed when Pacquaio showed on the ring his super quick powerful punches which led the "Pacman" to a dramatic victory (via technical knockout in the second round). Again, days before and even during the Pacquiao-Cotto match, many people were giving out their predictions saying that Cotto would be brining home the bacon --- but my boyfriend and I kept our faith strong that Manny would be the one to bring home the glory or at least, a bigger slice of the bacon.

The first round was nerve wracking as both boxers were trying to get familiar with each other's move and speed. It was in the third round when Pacquiao landed a hard right hand to the temple of Cotto and knocked Cotto down and again in the fourth Pacquio's left uppercut on Cotto dropped the WBO welterweight campion on the floor which made his fans watch in disbelief. Cotto might be big and strong but these features of him weren't enough to bring down Manny Pacquiao, the boxing's pound-for-pound king. The Pacman remained strong and super fast throughout the entire match. It was on the 12th/last round when the referee, Kenny Bayless stopped the fight (time was 55 seconds of the round) after Pacquiao delivered a strong left hand which brought Cotto to the ropes.

The Pacman is now the new WBO welterweight champion. Pacquiao is now a world record holder of seven titles at seven different weight level divisions which is totally amazing.

To Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto --- thank you for an amazing boxing match!

  1. Pacman gains another title and he's able to combat any style of fighter as he proved last night. Pacman was just the quicker of the two.

Another FYI, the dream match-up with Floyd Mayweather may take place at the biggest domed stadium in the world, Cowboys Stadium. Oh yeah, Cowboys Stadium is one of the places I visited when I was on vacation to Dallas in October. If they have it there, it will shatter attendance records for boxing and likely revenue for all involved, too.

  3. 'D: yup. he sure gained another title and I was really jumping for joy when he won the match.

I have heard about the Pacquiao-Mayweather match-up. If ever it will push through, I hope Pacquiao will again win it although I am aware that it is not that easy to defeat Mayweather.

Have a great day blugging buddy!
