Although it hasn’t received high star ratings from viewers, The Core is listed in my favorite Sci-Fi movie file. I have lost count on how many times I have watched this film in total. Call me crazy but this year alone, I’ve watched it twice [already], first with my shadow and a bowl of popcorn and just recently with my mom-in-law. [Photo credit: IMDB.com]
Why am I so head over heels with this film? To start with, I am a huge Hillary Swank and Aaron Eckhart fan. Aside from that, The Core has an interesting and quite unique plot. What if the Earth stops spinning at one point? Sending a group of scientists and engineers who are expert in different fields to drill down to the Earth’s center to hopefully jumpstart the planet and save mankind does sound extremely captivating for me.
If you’ve seen The Core, then you’ll definitely remember Virgil, the $15 billion dollar drilling machine. With only three months to build it, one can imagine heavy duty power tools, metal framing systems, giant saw blades, surface grinding wheels, enormous welding gadgets, cables and wires scattered all over the place. If this has happened for real, with such a huge project, the engineers might even make use of secure solar panel installations, don’t you think?
Introducing… Virgil. She’s beautiful, isn’t she? Virgil’s mission is to deliver 1,000 magaton of explosive charge using more than 5,000 nuclear warheads to restart the Earth’s core. Now that’s one cool machine! Despite a number of casualties, of course it’s mission accomplished.
How about you? Have you seen The Core? Like it, hate it or so-so?
